The Selva Maya Carbon Offset Project 

Scientific evidence indicates that the risks of global warming are so dire that aggressive and immediate action is needed to reduce carbon emissions globally. Rainforest2Reef is at the forefront of a global movement to offset carbon emissions through avoided deforestation. Our work focuses on the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, which is part of the 6 million-acre Selva Maya Rainforest. Since our founding, we have developed a unique and effective approach to land protection- we sign permanent and binding conservation agreements with local communities, or ejidos, that ensure that the ejidos refrain from logging and other destructive activities.

Through these agreements Rainforest2Reef has protected 182,000 acres of rainforest habitat and has prevented more that a million tons of carbon from entering the atmosphere.

Rainforest2Reef is in the process of quantifying and verifying our carbon with the Environmental Resources Trust and the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance to ensure that we are able to offer our members the highest quality carbon offsets and to help set the standard for this evolving market.
