For years, the Selva Maya rainforest has remained largely unprotected from illegal hunting, logging, and development. Two startling predictions from scientists are:
- If current deforestation rates continue, Mesoamerica’s forests will disappear in by the year 2015.
- As much as 70% of the Mesoamerican reefs may be lost by the year 2050 due to decline in water quality, rising water temperatures, pollution and other causes.
It is Rainforest2Reef’s mission to protect the
entirety of the land stretching from the Mesoamerican reef, to the Calakmul
Biosphere Reserve, to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve from future
damage by working with the ejidos to conserve this land.
